I’m probably slow to jump on this train, but let’s talk about oil diffusers for a second. Has everyone else had one forever? Well, I just got my first one for Christmas and I’m not sure I’ve ever been so excited for a gift (as an adult at least).
I didn’t do a ton of research into which brand or size I wanted, I just hopped on Target.com and sent a link to Trevor for the one I thought was the prettiest. As it turns out, the one I picked out is actually pretty small, but still lasts for about four hours when it’s on the constant setting.
Anyway, we can get more into the details of my specific diffuser later. What I really want to talk about is the purpose of oil diffusers and why they’re such a hot trendy item right now in the wellness space. This way, if you haven’t given in to buying one just yet because you needed some convincing (or some knowledge), hopefully this post does the trick.
Purpose + Function
The purpose of the diffuser itself is to disperse essential oils into the air of the room it’s in. To do this, you fill your diffuser with water (amount varies based on size of diffuser) and drop in whatever essential oil you’re vibing with that day. For example, when I was sick I was addicted to the lemon essential oil because it’s supposed to cleanse. More on that below.
Anyway, the water/oil combination is then diffused into the air as a vapor, which is then breathed in and absorbed into the body. Most diffusers have different settings so you can have the vapor puffing out in a constant stream or set it to puff a few times an hour.
Essential Oils + Benefits
There’s a million essential oils out there and even more combinations that you can buy or mix up on your own. You can diffuse oils based on which smell you like best or you go off of what kind of environment you want to create. What the heck does this mean? Well, let me explain
Each essential oil has a certain…power…if you will. Like I said above, when I was sick, I diffused lemon non-stop because of its cleansing properties. If you’re feeling anxious, need a burst of energy or are looking for a sleep aid—there’s an essential oil for each.
Below are some of the most popular essential oils and their respective benefits!
Relaxation and sleep – lavender and chamomile
Mood booster – sweet orange, jasmine, rose, sandalwood and vanilla
Ward off an illness – lemon, thyme, tea tree and grapefruit
Improve cognitive function – lemon, eucalyptus, peppermint and pine
One of my favorites so far is sweet orange (clearly I’m excited, look at the photo below), both for its smell and its energizing, brain boosting powers! It’s perfect to have on hand in the morning at your desk or while you’re eating breakfast.
So, tell me, what are your favorite essential oils and why? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts!
