I’ve always had an interesting relationship with food. Going back as far as I can remember I’ve always loved to eat and cook. Unfortunately, my love for food has also led me to over eating and portion control issues. Even with all the changes I’ve made recently to my diet, I still struggle with being able to stop once I’m full.
All of that said, even with this wellness challenge I don’t want to focus only on eating and exercise. Sure, they are a piece of wellness that should be touched on, but to me, they’re two pieces of a very large puzzle. Instead of going the traditional route, though, and preaching about going on a diet, I want to suggest an alternative.
Cue food journaling.
I actually didn’t come up with this wellness challenge on my own—one of you suggested it as something helpful! I love it because it’s a very simple way to start holding yourself accountable (I need this desperately).
In my New Year’s post, I talked a lot about being intentional in 2018, so this is my first step in trying to do so. Especially because eating is one of the number one places I, personally, need to put focus on this year.
So, what the heck is food journaling?
It’s as simple as it sounds—grab a journal, and write down what you eat throughout the day. The point of this is not to keep track of calories or anything like that, but rather put what one eats throughout the day into perspective.
I’ve already started journaling and I can’t believe how sobering it is to see all the snacks and quick handfuls of this or that. They all add up so quickly and I don’t even realize how much I’m eating during the day. Working from home also just makes it wayyy too easy to stop and eat every other minute.
The person who suggested this as a wellness challenge also recommended to get specific with your journal. So, for example, if you have a smoothie for breakfast, don’t just write “smoothie.” Write the amount of each ingredient in your smoothie—that way you can see throughout the day how many veggies, fruits, carbs, etc. you’ve eaten. I think doing this will help me be more intentional (there’s that word again) about what I’m fueling my body with.
I’m very excited to start this new challenge and make it part of my daily routine. I hope this is something you all are also interested in as a way to help make 2018 the start of a new, healthier lifestyle. Please let me know what you think in the comments and if you have any suggestions for upcoming challenges!
