I’ve always been a big smoothie gal, but ever since embarking on this plant based journey, it’s been kicked into overdrive. Smoothies have for sure become a staple in my every day routine.
I used to think that a smoothie always had to have dairy in it—or at least some kind of yogurt. I think I thought a smoothie couldn’t be creamy if it didn’t have cow milk or regular yogurt mixed in. Well, after watching Erin Ireland (check her out for plant stuff) whip stuff up in her kitchen, I realized yogurt (or dairy) wasn’t as crucial as I always thought.
Tweaks are sometimes made, but the recipe below is what I usually make on a daily basis. If I add anything different, it’s usually a scoop of peanut butter. I’ve also added a splash or juice before (if you want to go this route, I suggest fresh squeezed or something not from concentrate and with no added sugar), which can really sweeten up the flavor. For the most part, though, this is my go-to recipe. Enjoy, and remember—you can’t taste the spinach so don’t be shy! 😉
PS – I also HIGHLY suggest a professional blender. The Ninja is the most affordable option I found.
My Go-To Green Smoothie
- 2-3 cups spinach
- 1/2 cup frozen fruit (I usually have a pineapple, mango, peach and strawberry blend)
- 1 sliver ginger root
- 1 tsp tumeric
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 cup almond milk or water
- 1 tbsp hemp seed
- 1 tbsp flax seed
I use the individual blender containers from my Ninja, so keep that in mind
Add your spinach first—you'll want to kind of cram it all at the bottom to make sure you have room for everything else
Add frozen fruit
Add remaining ingredients with the liquid being last
Blend and enjoy!
